Will My Baby Have Hair at Birth?

Will My Baby Have Hair at Birth?
Have you ever wondered if your little one will be born with a head full of luscious locks or if they'll sport a cute bald look?
Well, let's dive into the fascinating world of baby hair and find out what you can expect when it comes to your baby's crowning glory.
Baby Hair: An Early Sign of Growth
You may be delighted to know that many babies do indeed have hair at birth.
In fact, the development of baby hair starts early in pregnancy.
Around 22 weeks, hair follicles begin to form on your baby's scalp, and by 28 weeks, they start producing hair.
So, it's possible for your little one to have a decent amount of hair when they make their grand entrance into the world.
What Determines Baby's Hair Growth?
While every baby is unique, there are a few factors that can influence the amount and type of hair they have at birth.
Here's what you should know:
  • Genetics: Hair growth patterns, texture, and color are largely determined by genetics. Look to your own and your partner's family history to get an idea of what your baby's hair might be like.
  • Hormones: Hormones play a role in hair development, and your baby is exposed to them while in the womb. Hormonal factors can affect the thickness and length of their hair.
  • Ethnicity: Different ethnicities tend to have different hair characteristics. For example, babies of African or African-American descent often have tightly curled or textured hair, while babies of Asian descent may have straight, silky hair.
Variations in Baby Hair
Just like with adults, baby hair comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors.
Here are some common variations you might observe:
  • Fine and Thin: Some babies are born with wispy and delicate hair that gradually thickens and becomes more visible as they grow.
  • Thick and Full: Other babies are blessed with a thick and voluminous mane right from the start. It's not uncommon for these babies to have a head full of beautiful hair that captures everyone's attention.
  • Different Colors: Baby hair can also surprise you with its color. While some babies are born with the hair color they'll keep, others experience changes in color during the first months. It's not uncommon for babies with darker hair to have it lighten over time.
Caring for Your Baby's Hair
While your baby's hair might not require an elaborate hair care routine, here are some simple tips to keep their delicate locks healthy:
  • Gentle Washing: Use a mild baby shampoo and wash your baby's hair gently, taking care to avoid getting soap in their eyes.
  • Brushing: Once your baby's hair starts growing, you can use a soft baby brush or comb to gently remove tangles and keep their hair looking neat.
  • Sun Protection: If you're planning to spend time outdoors, protect your baby's scalp from the sun's harmful rays by using a hat or a baby-safe sunscreen.
  • Avoid Harsh Products: Steer clear of adult hair care products that might contain harsh chemicals or fragrances that can irritate your baby's sensitive scalp.

Personally, I think it's an old wives tail cause my 1st had a HEAD FULL of jet black hair and I had less heartburn than ever. Then, with my 2nd, I had more prob w reflux and she def had enough hair but it wasn't as much as sis.

My baby shower isn’t even until January, but I want to chose a hair color that can stay with me until birth, something very bright and vibrant like my pink when I had it.

I definitely say talk to your OB about it, my OB personally said it’s safe because chemicals in dye aren’t the same as they were a while ago and there’s no study that proves dye harms baby but I definitely feel like it’s a personal choice and to talk to your OB about their views on it. First time I bleached and dyed hair was at 10 weeks and now again at 22 weeks but I also stayed in a well ventilated area with a mask so I didn’t inhale or keep the dye on my hair super long and she’s still doing good 💕

I made something using my son and baby girls ultrasound. My son had blonde hair yet me and his daddy have dark hair (mine having a red tent to it) I wonder what color hair she will have. He was breached so I had to have a c section and this one Dr said plan for a c section. 9m so happy.

Hey ladies, yes heartburn sucks and it's NO JOKE! BUT When I gave birth to my first son, I realized that his hair was also NO JOKE! Don't let anybody make you think your NEWBORN can't be born with a lot of hair just because their NEWBORN barely had any. I had so many people tell me that my son was going to lose his hair, which is typical of a baby. Not mine. NEWBORN TO 7 MONTHS IN AND MY BABYS HAIR IS LUSCIOUS AND THRIVING ❤️💕🤷 second pregnancy and my heartburn is once again NO JOKE! Hair also runs in my family so maybe it's genetics 🤷
