What to Know About Placenta Previa

What to Know About Placenta Previa
Placenta Previa can be a concern during pregnancy, but understanding what it is and how it can affect you and your baby will help you navigate this condition with confidence.
Here's what you need to know:
The Placenta's Unusual Position
During a healthy pregnancy, the placenta attaches to the uterine wall, away from the cervix.
However, with Placenta Previa, the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix, posing potential risks.
It's important to note that the position of the placenta can change as your pregnancy progresses, so regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are essential.
Signs and Symptoms
Placenta Previa may not always present noticeable symptoms, but some women may experience:
  • Painless vaginal bleeding: This is the primary indicator of Placenta Previa and often occurs in the second or third trimester.
  • Spotting: Light vaginal bleeding or pink-tinged discharge.
  • No abdominal pain: Unlike other conditions, Placenta Previa typically doesn't cause abdominal pain or discomfort.
Diagnosis and Medical Care
If you experience any bleeding during pregnancy, it's crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
Your healthcare provider will perform a thorough examination, which may include:
  • Ultrasound: A painless and non-invasive procedure to visualize the placenta's location and evaluate its proximity to the cervix.
  • Pelvic examination: Your healthcare provider may perform a pelvic exam to assess the position of the cervix and placenta.
Managing Placenta Previa
Placenta Previa requires careful management to ensure the well-being of both you and your baby.
Here are some important considerations:
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities: Engaging in heavy lifting or rigorous exercise can increase the risk of bleeding. Take it easy and prioritize rest when necessary.
  • Monitor for bleeding: Keep an eye out for any bleeding or spotting and report it to your healthcare provider immediately. Be prepared to seek medical attention if the bleeding becomes heavy or persistent.
  • Plan for potential complications: In some cases, Placenta Previa may necessitate a cesarean section delivery. Discuss your birth plan with your healthcare provider and be prepared for different scenarios.

Was just told I have a placenta previa. No sex or lifting over 20 pounds for at least 4-6 weeks. They are going to check me again to see if my placenta moves. If not doctors talking c-section at 36-37 weeks. Anyone have placenta previa? What's it been/was like for you?

One of my pregnancy I had complete placenta previa and another one lay low previa, that came with bleeding. Both of my pregnancy my placenta shifted which gave me clearance for a vaginal delivery. Before, all that it did create a ton of anxiety and stressors. My best advice would be to figure way to put your stress at ease, listen to your body and take in what you feel is necessary from your doctor. If by chance, your placenta doesn’t shift ensure to do the proper research to best prepare yourself for a c-section. Most importantly, is the health of your baby and you, and safety. 🙏💖

Does anyone know anything about placenta previa? I was just diagnosed and was told to stop having sex and I'm on other restrictions as well. I am currently 12 weeks. When will it resolve?

I know nothing about or ever heard of it til now.....I googled and it seems like it's a bleeding issue.....so I would try not to stress about it and just do what your doctor tells you too...I hope it gets better for you ❤️

I have no bleeding. I hope I don't start bleeding cuz I have PTSD from my first pregnancy. I had a placenta abruption with her and bled really severe. I lost her shortly after birth, so I am freaking out about being told I have this.

I did some google research on it because my doctor told me at 14 weeks they saw some spotting but not to worry that it usually goes away on it’s own. Currently I been going to different appointments to get some testing done. On your next doctor visit you should definitely ask more questions to see if it a big concern to worry about or is it something that there should be monitored

I had it, I believe I was diagnosed at about 19 weeks. It’s when the placenta covers the cervix. Now usually as the pregnancy progresses the placenta will start to move away from the cervix which is what happened to me. That means you’re in the clear. Now if further into the pregnancy it hasn’t moved than that can cause for early labor or even just mean you won’t be able to have a vaginal birth. As of now you’re only 19 weeks so I wouldn’t worry about it If I were you just no heavy lifting and you should abstain from having sex. You’ll be fine, placenta previa is common but it subsides.

March 1st at my anatomy scan they said I had it. Told me to come back in 4 wks and maybe it will clear itself up. I am hoping so bc I was so hoping not to run into any problems. But they explained it should not affect the baby. I still get nervous thinking it will. It’s more common than I ever knew. I was just reading about placenta previa before I went to the dr and felt like I jinxed myself or something. They said if it never clears up a c-section will have to be done, that’s another thing I don’t want! All I can say is girl hopefully it clears up at some point and we can go on to have a natural birth with no more complications. Praying for us! 🙏🙏🙏

I am 24 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with complete placenta previa at 21 weeks. Dr told me that a c section is necessary if it doesn’t move. I’m so scared and don’t know what to expect. Any advice whether it’s about c section or placenta previa ):

I had placenta previa as well during my first pregnancy. The placenta ended up moving on its own and I was able to have a natural childbirth. Easy for me to say but try not to stress about it. Our bodies can definitely work wonders!

Got some news I didn’t want to get today at my ultrasound I have a placenta Previa going to double check in 6 weeks to make sure but if you don’t know what that is it’s when the placenta is coving the birth Canal and doctor said I’ll have to get a c-section 1 month before my due date. I’m so upset with this being my first I wanted to try a natural birth and now if I have this it’s not possible.

I have it too, but there’s a very good chance as our uterus grows the placenta will move away 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
