Understanding Pregnancy Loss in the Second Trimester

Understanding Pregnancy Loss in the Second Trimester
Experiencing a miscarriage in the second trimester can be an extremely difficult and emotional time for you and your family.
Here are all the information you need to know about this.
Key Facts
Approximately 2-3% of pregnancies are lost during this period, with the rate of fetal demise after 20 weeks being less than 0.5%.
Seeking emotional and medical support during this time is crucial for your well-being - as you may feel as if you are losing a close family member, having already developed hopes and dreams for your unborn child.
Diagnosing the Condition
  • If you experience symptoms like bleeding, cramping, and loss of fetal movement, it could indicate a possible second trimester loss.
  • A fetal demise is diagnosed through an ultrasound that shows no fetal heart activity.
  • Decreased fetal movement, especially after the 20th week, is a serious concern and requires immediate medical attention.
Managing and Treating the Condition
  • The treatment options for a second trimester loss differ significantly from those of an early miscarriage.
  • It is important for you not to wait for a natural delivery due to the high risk of significant bleeding and changes in your body's clotting system.
  • Surgical evacuation and labor induction are the main treatment options, each with specific procedures and recovery considerations.
  • During this process, receiving emotional support and having your religious preferences and wishes for remembrances respected are essential.
In this challenging time, remember that it's okay to feel a range of emotions and to take the time you need to heal. You are not alone in this journey.
There is a community and professionals ready to support you. Your feelings are valid, and it's important to allow yourself the space and time to grieve.

Anyone else dealt with pelvic girdle pain in their first trimester? This is my second child but 3rd pregnancy. I miscarried with my first pregnancy.

Guys. I’m getting a #cerclage tomorrow and I’m terrified. I’m 12 weeks and I had a sub chorionic hemorrhage a few days ago. I had a second trimester loss at 18 weeks which is why I’m getting the cerclage preventatively. Does anyone have any experience with this I’m freaking out

Man do i feel like that. I’m already almost 19 weeks and it’s crazy. I’ve been working on a few registries which seems crazy. February can’t get here soon enough tho.
