In this article, we will explore the amazing functions of the umbilical cord and provide you with valuable information to support a healthy and happy pregnancy.
So, let's dive into the fascinating world of umbilical wonders!
The Lifeline of Connection
The umbilical cord serves as the vital link between you and your baby, connecting the placenta to the developing fetus.
This cord, typically around 50-60 centimeters long, consists of three blood vessels: two arteries and one vein.
The vein carries oxygen and essential nutrients from you to your baby, while the arteries transport waste and deoxygenated blood back to the placenta for filtration.
This intricate network allows for the exchange of vital substances, ensuring your baby's growth and well-being. It's truly remarkable how this cord acts as a lifeline of connection, nurturing your little one throughout pregnancy.
Nutrient Powerhouse
During pregnancy, providing proper nutrition is crucial for your baby's development, and the umbilical cord plays a significant role in delivering those essential nutrients.
Through the placenta and umbilical cord, your baby receives a constant supply of vital substances, including proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Did you know that the umbilical cord can transport up to 200 liters of blood per day, delivering approximately 500-600 milliliters of nutrient-rich blood to your baby every minute?
This astonishing flow ensures that your baby receives the nourishment needed to thrive and grow. Remember, a balanced and nutritious diet is key to supporting this umbilical wonder!
Protective Shield
Beyond its role as a lifeline and nutrient transporter, the umbilical cord also acts as a protective shield for your baby.
The Wharton's jelly, a gelatinous substance within the cord, cushions and shields the blood vessels, providing a layer of insulation and safeguarding them from external pressure.
This remarkable feature helps protect the delicate vessels and ensures continuous blood flow between you and your baby.
It's incredible how the umbilical cord serves not only as a means of sustenance but also as a shield of protection, creating a safe environment for your little one to thrive.
The Gift of Bonding
While the umbilical cord nourishes and protects your baby physically, it also symbolizes the profound emotional bond between you and your little one.
As you caress your belly or feel those gentle kicks, you're experiencing the magical connection made possible by the umbilical cord.
Innie bellybuttons kind of look like the end of a balloon and outies look like a cinnamon roll at the beginning lol. I think this looks more like an innie, you’ll be able to tell more once she gets a little older. I can’t really tell what my daughter is still.

My daughters umbilical stump dropped today! 19 days 🫶🏾
Now how can I prevent from her having an outtie?
Take a ear q tips and clean the area with peroxide. Like 1 a day. You sometimes can not prevent an outie or a hernia in the belly button
My oldest had a hernia and did not close by the time she was 5 yr old they give it to that age to hopefully heal on it's own. But it did not and had to be surgically repaired. Now she is 12 and no problems. My 3 pregnancy boy. Who is now 7. Has an outie belly button. It doesn't bug him. Congratulations on your little one.
Hope this helps. This is my 7th baby and what information I have has helped in the past. ❤️

I honestly be scared something is going to pull it off early like the diaper or the way you hold them and it be having me weak like it hurt my baby 😂I know it don’t but I be ready to give her baths and not worry about her stump it’s a lot of care don’t want it to get infected or nothing

Just found out my baby has to get surgery on her umbilical card she has umbilical granuloma I hope everything goes good 🙏🙏🙏
My doctor was surprised my sons was still on the other day at his appointment. She ended up dabbing around it with an alcohol pad & it pushed out more since then.

My sister had this when she was pregnant with my niece…she is now 9 years old and perfectly healthy! She said she found out during her anatomy scan and saw a specialist the remainder of the pregnancy just to make sure the baby was getting enough blood flow and nutrients but other than additional scans she didn’t have to do anything and she turned out perfect! I’m currently 22 weeks awaiting my anatomy scan and super nervous!

This umbilical vein varix thing id scaring me has any other mommies had this problem?
Hey! I did a search on the Umbilic Vein Varix thing and I'm confused. They just dated me at 16 weeks and said they will monitor it again at 20 weeks.
Is it as scary as it sounds/looks???
Did you require additional testing?

I was scared at first too when she told me but no it not as scary as it looks long as it doesn’t change and blood is still flowing correctly then everything is fine . Yes you will be monitored every week from now on and to do growth check ups . Everything will be ok
