Tummy Time: The Fun Exercise for Your Little One!

Tummy Time: The Fun Exercise for Your Little One!
Tummy time is a delightful and beneficial activity recommended for healthy babies like yours!
It involves letting your little one spend some time lying on their stomachs, either on a soft blanket or play mat, under your watchful eye, or even on mommy or daddy's chest.
This simple practice holds immense value as it allows infants to hone essential physical skills, setting the stage for achieving significant developmental milestones in the future.
Why is Tummy Time Important?
  • Developing Muscle Strength: Tummy time encourages your baby to use their neck, shoulder, and arm muscles, aiding in the development of upper body strength. It also helps them build core muscles, which are vital for sitting up and crawling later on.
  • Enhancing Motor Skills: While on their tummy, babies learn to push up on their arms and lift their head, which contributes to the improvement of their fine and gross motor skills. This newfound strength and coordination will be essential for rolling over, crawling, and eventually walking.
  • Preventing Flat Spots: Spending time on their back can sometimes lead to flat spots on a baby's head. Tummy time helps relieve pressure on the back of the head and encourages a rounder shape.
Getting Started with Tummy Time
Now that you know how beneficial tummy time is for your little one, let's dive into some tips on how to get started and make it an enjoyable experience:
  • Begin Gradually: Start with short sessions of tummy time, just a few minutes a couple of times a day. As your baby gets used to it, gradually increase the duration.
  • Make it Fun: Use colorful toys or a mirror to capture your baby's attention during tummy time. This will keep them engaged and happy.
  • Join In: Get down on the floor with your baby during tummy time and interact with them. Your presence and encouragement will make it even more enjoyable for them.
  • Variety Matters: Don't limit tummy time to just one spot. You can change locations or even take it outdoors for some fresh air and a change of scenery.
Safety First
  • Always Supervise: It's crucial to supervise your baby during tummy time to ensure their safety. Stay close by, and if you need to step away, gently roll them onto their back.
  • After Meals: Avoid doing tummy time immediately after feeding to reduce the risk of spit-up.
  • Consistency is Key: Try to make tummy time a part of your daily routine. Regular practice will help your baby get more comfortable with it over time.
  • Be Patient: Some babies may not enjoy tummy time at first. Be patient, and with time, they'll grow to love it as they gain strength and confidence.

At that age you do tummy time on your chest. It’s never too early it just looks different when they’re younger

My 4 month old isn’t a fan of tummy time he keeps his head up but doesn’t really push up with his arms. Any suggestions or is anyone else’s little one also going through the same thing?

The best advice my son's doctor told me, keep doing it. Keep pushing your baby through out the day as well as pushing them to go for a certain amount of time while doing so. You can always get tummy time toys. My aunt got him this thing that sings and vibrates as well as toys he can put in his mouth and make crinkly noises. Eventually my son realized he needs to use his arms to push up, took him about 2 weeks to finally get it lol I stay consistent. Now he's pushing himself to start crawling and sitting up.
