Trying to Conceive After Miscarriage: When to Start

When to Try Again for Pregnancy After Miscarriage
Emotional Considerations
Deciding when to attempt pregnancy again is ultimately up to you. Your emotional well-being should guide your decision. Take into account the need to prepare yourself emotionally and physically for a new pregnancy.
Allow yourself time to grieve the loss of your baby before contemplating the future. Some couples find that trying again promptly helps them cope with their experience.
Optimal Timing for Reduced Risk
Studies indicate that conceiving within six months of a miscarriage may lower your risk of subsequent miscarriages. Women who conceive within this timeframe reduce their risk by one-third. Furthermore, they enhance the chances of a successful and healthy pregnancy.
While the exact reasons remain unclear, the findings suggest that women who feel emotionally prepared should consider trying again soon after a miscarriage.
Professional Guidance
Consult your doctor to determine if there are any medical reasons that require you to wait before attempting pregnancy again.
If you've experienced one or two early miscarriages, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled after three miscarriages. However, you can proactively arrange an appointment with your GP to discuss your concerns and questions about trying for pregnancy again.
Physical Readiness and Timing
Resume sexual activity once miscarriage symptoms like pain or bleeding have subsided to avoid the risk of infection.
Your doctor might advise waiting for at least one period before trying for another baby. The first menstrual cycle after a miscarriage can be longer or shorter than usual, potentially affecting accurate conception timing. Even if you conceive before your first period, it doesn't increase the risk to your pregnancy.
Post-Specific Pregnancy Scenarios
After a molar pregnancy, it's best to wait until your after-treatment monitoring is complete. Additional treatment might be needed to remove any remaining cells in your womb.
For those who've had an ectopic pregnancy, waiting for at least two periods post-treatment before trying again is typically advised. If treated with methotrexate, a wait of at least three months is recommended to prevent potential harm to a future pregnancy.
Emotional Preparedness and Support
The timing of feeling emotionally ready to attempt pregnancy again varies for each individual. Some require more time to process their loss, while others see a new pregnancy as a step towards healing.
Confide in a trusted person—a family member, friend, or professional—to navigate this complex emotional journey. Support can play a crucial role.
Understanding the Likelihood of Miscarriage and Mental Well-being
Worries about future miscarriages are natural, but most early miscarriages are isolated incidents. If struggling with negative emotions, seeking professional assistance is essential, as mental health issues can arise during or after pregnancy.
Navigating Antenatal Care and Mental Health
You can request early or extra scans as part of your antenatal care for peace of mind. While scans cannot guarantee outcomes, they can offer reassurance.
Remember that there are no guarantees, but informed decisions, prioritizing emotional well-being, seeking professional guidance, and maintaining optimal health can enhance your chances of a successful pregnancy after a miscarriage.

We started trying again this week after a miscarriage back in September. Praying I’m able to conceive and carry to term this time, if I cannot I’ve decided to call it quits because of how taxing it is emotionally and physically. Fingers crossed. 👩‍🍼

I had my first miscarriage on January 18, of 2023. Two weeks ago, we baby jumped and being on my second week, for the past three days my breast has been temporarily in pains or aching but not to major. Sometimes it feels weighed and sometimes it doesn’t. I hope I am pregnant 🤰🏼

What prenatals did everybody use? I want to start back up on them while we’re trying to conceive in hopes to help avoid yet another miscarriage.

I had a miscarriage Sept 26 and was told I should stop bleeding in 14 days. Here I am still bleeding on day 20. Has anyone bled this long? Should I be worried? I eager to start trying to conceive again.

You should probably not try so soon and monitor how much blood you’re losing

it has slowed down a lot. It's not heavy at all. I was told by my dr that I could try after 14 days but only because of my age. I'm 42 so the sooner the better.
