Sore & Bleeding Gums

Sore & Bleeding Gums
Sore and bleeding gums are a common pregnancy symptom that can be uncomfortable and worrisome for many women.

It's essential to remember that your body is going through significant changes as your hormones fluctuate to support your growing baby. This can cause swelling and tenderness in your gums, leading to bleeding.

Is it normal?
While sore and bleeding gums are common during pregnancy, it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene and watch for any signs of infection. With time, many women find that their gums improve as their hormones stabilize.

Nevertheless, regular dental check-ups and cleanings throughout your pregnancy can help prevent more severe dental problems.
Prevent and care
  • Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.
  • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to reduce gum irritation.
  • Consider rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash under the guidance of your dentist.
Bleeding gums aren’t pleasant, but with the knowledge you’ve gained (and a soft-bristled toothbrush), you’ll easily make it to the finish line.

When to consult?
If you're struggling with sore and bleeding gums, it's crucial to speak with your dentist or OB-GYN as soon as possible. They can evaluate your gums and recommend treatments or refer you to a specialist if necessary.

It's always better to err on the side of caution and address any concerns openly and honestly with your healthcare provider.
Top Asked Questions
Why do hormonal changes during pregnancy lead to sore and bleeding gums, and when is it most common?

Hormonal fluctuations, especially elevated progesterone, can increase gum sensitivity, and this condition is most common during the second trimester.

What specific oral hygiene practices can help alleviate sore and bleeding gums during pregnancy?

Maintaining regular oral hygiene, using a soft-bristle toothbrush, and considering antimicrobial mouthwash under dental guidance can help manage and prevent gum issues.

When should I consult with a dentist about sore and bleeding gums during pregnancy?

If sore and bleeding gums persist or worsen despite good oral hygiene, it's advisable to consult with a dentist for professional evaluation and guidance.

Anyone else dealing with bleeding gums ? This started around 30 weeks I believe. I did try coconut oil pulling (swishing it around without swallowing) and it helps when I’m consistent.

I use a splash of hydrogen peroxide in water to stop it. Then I rinse out well. I will look into the coconut oil, my gums hurt from swelling too 😥

Have any of you experienced changes in your gums/teeth? Ever since I got pregnant I noticed my gums becoming more sensitive and swollen and bleeding every time I brush my teeth. It’s only getting worse the farther along I get 😭 I have braces so I’m very good with keeping my teeth clean and I’ve never experienced this before until now.

Any one having problems with teeth or gum pain🤕😬😤 Pregnancy causes a rush of hormones and increases blood flow thus causing swollen gums and sore teeth. Pregnant women are more susceptible to gum disease and sensitive teeth because they react differently to bacteria. This increases plaque build-up and potential damage to teeth.
