Practice Breathing Movements

Practice Breathing Movements
As you reach the 32nd week of your pregnancy, your baby is actively engaging in practice breathing movements, an essential step in preparing for life after birth.
During this stage, the fetus simulates breathing by inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid, a process crucial for the development of their respiratory system.
Understanding Practice Breathing Movements
  • Simulation of Breathing: Although there's no air in the womb, your baby mimics breathing by moving amniotic fluid in and out of their lungs. This is not for oxygen exchange (as the placenta provides oxygen) but for developing the muscles and reflexes needed for breathing after birth.
  • Lung Development: These movements are critical for further lung development, helping to strengthen the chest muscles and the diaphragm.
Frequency and Detection of Practice Breaths
  • Observation through Ultrasound: Practice breathing movements can often be observed during an ultrasound. You might see rhythmic movements of the fetus's chest or abdomen.
  • Frequency: While not constant, these practice breaths occur intermittently throughout the day. They may last for a few seconds to several minutes at a time.
Significance of Practice Breathing
  • Preparation for Air Breathing: This practice is essential for your baby to adapt to breathing air once they are born. It's a sign that the respiratory system is maturing and preparing for the necessary function of breathing outside the womb.
  • Indicator of Healthy Development: Regular practice breathing movements are a positive sign of normal neurological and muscular development.
At 32 weeks, the practice of breathing movements is a significant milestone in fetal development.
These movements are a fascinating aspect of your baby's preparation for life outside the womb, indicating healthy growth and development.

Todays growth scan went exactly how I thought it would. My fluid levels are at 7 cm even though I’ve been drinking a gallon of water a day. She’s in the first percentile still, she was 3 pounds 4 oz. My baby was kicking, moving her arms and doing a lot of practice breathing.

Aw man, I'm so sorry what's the plan then? I was hoping she was bigger. Is everything else normal otherwise?

Yah everything else is normal, she’s just measuring a little small. She’s measuring in between 31 and 32 weeks so she’s not that far behind.
