Baby’s Changes Overview

  • Pregnancy Announcement: This may be a time to consider how you'll share the exciting news of your pregnancy.

  • Skeletal Development: Remarkably, your baby now has 270 bones, more than an adult's 206, which will eventually fuse as they grow.

  • Skin Transparency: At this stage, the baby's skin remains translucent, offering a glimpse into the developing body beneath.

  • Fetal Status: Your baby is officially classified as a fetus, a term marking a new phase of development.

  • First Trimester Screening: The nuchal translucency screening (NTS) is a common procedure around this time, assessing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities through ultrasound and blood tests.

  • Limbs and Digits: Arms and legs are elongating, with the ability to bend at the elbows and knees, and distinct fingers, toes, and even unique fingerprints are forming.

  • Facial and Sensory Development: The ears are migrating to their final position, and the larynx, including the vocal cords, is formed, laying the groundwork for future auditory experiences.

  • Neural and Organ Development: The brain is rapidly creating neural connections, and the baby's vital organs are becoming more defined and functional.
This period is also when many parents opt for the Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), offering insights into the baby's genetic health.

Helping your baby's development
  • Caffeine Consumption: Moderate your caffeine intake to no more than two 6-ounce cups per day to ensure safety for both you and your baby.

  • Maintain Positivity: A positive mindset can significantly benefit both your and your baby's health during pregnancy.

  • Seek Support: Pregnancy is an emotional journey; lean on your partner, family, or friends for support when needed.

  • Consider a Doula: Doulas provide invaluable support during pregnancy and childbirth, offering both emotional and physical assistance.

  • Prioritize Self-Care: Dedicate time to activities that relax and rejuvenate you, such as prenatal massages, reading, or taking leisurely baths.
Top Asked Questions
When should I announce my pregnancy to family and friends?

What can I do about pregnancy-related constipation?

To relieve constipation, increase fiber intake, stay hydrated, and engage in regular physical activity. Consult your healthcare provider before using any over-the-counter laxatives.

When should I start shopping for baby essentials?

You can start shopping for baby essentials at any time during pregnancy. Many parents begin in the second trimester to spread out costs and reduce stress closer to the due date.

Is it normal to have mood swings during the first trimester?

Yes, mood swings are common due to hormonal changes. It's essential to communicate with your partner and seek support from loved ones during this time.

Is it normal not to be able to hear your baby’s heart beat on a Doppler at 10 weeks and 6 days?

Yes, the smaller the baby, the harder it is to find the heartbeat. Also, if you’re not a medical professional, you might struggle in the beginning. You should worry when the hospital cannot find it. Start at the belly button, and work your way down to the pelvic bone—your baby should be closer to the pelvic bone because you’re still early.
