Let's talk today about something less-discussed yet crucial: amniotic fluid.
This liquid gold serves as your baby's first home, providing a cozy, cushiony environment.
During the last month of pregnancy, monitoring the amniotic fluid level is like checking the weather conditions for your baby's grand arrival.
What is Amniotic Fluid?
The Importance of Amniotic Fluid Levels in the Last Month
As you nest and prep for D-day, don't forget the significance of maintaining optimal amniotic fluid levels.
In your last trimester, the quantity of this fluid is a key indicator of your baby's well-being.
Too much or too little could signify a potential issue.
Medically speaking, having low levels is known as oligohydramnios, while excessive fluid is termed polyhydramnios.
Both conditions warrant a more detailed evaluation, and possibly intervention, to ensure the healthiest start for your baby.
Oligohydramnios: Low fluid levels
Polyhydramnios: High fluid levels
How to Monitor Your Fluid Levels
Your healthcare provider will employ various assessment tools to check the status of your amniotic fluid. Most commonly, you'll undergo an ultrasound.
The sonographer measures pockets of fluid in your uterus and calculates an Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI).
This numerical value helps your medical team decide if further action is needed.
Sometimes a more specialized test called a Doppler ultrasound might be used to study the blood flow in the baby’s umbilical cord and vessels in the womb.
Ultrasound: Imaging technology to visualize amniotic fluid
Doppler Ultrasound: Advanced imaging
Tips to Maintain Healthy Amniotic Fluid Levels
Staying hydrated is the golden rule when it comes to maintaining those precious fluid levels.
Water is your best friend—aim for at least 8 cups a day.
And don't shy away from a nutritious diet rich in proteins and vitamins.
Some moms swear by coconut water, which is a tasty way to keep those fluid levels up.
But remember, always consult your healthcare provider before making any drastic changes to your diet or lifestyle.
Hydration: Water, herbal teas, and electrolyte-infused drinks
Nutrition: Your building blocks with fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains
Consult Your Doctor: Confirm any dietary changes or supplements with your healthcare provider
Remember, the last month of pregnancy is your home stretch, momma!
Keep your amniotic fluid levels in check and you're one step closer to meeting your bundle of joy.

37 weeks today, spotty contractions, went to hospital for ph strips turning blue after checking ph of leaking fluid. Thought it was amniotic fluid. I’m 5cm dilated and they are sending me home (amniotic fluid test negative) and they want me to progress further before getting checked in. Glad I’m not leaking fluid but bummed it’s not happening yet! #37weeks #5cmdilated #hurryup
They're sending you home at a 5!? Wtf. They normally admit anything 4 and over

That’s totally what I thought! They put in an IV and everything! I’ve been here for a few hours but said unless I progress myself they don’t have a medical reason to induce me. Nurse is saying I could stay 5cm for another day or two.

40+3 went to my appt I’m only 1cm dilated they are saying my amniotic fluid is low (4cm) and they are recommending an induction. I really want to avoid pitocin what are some ways to get my labor started naturally? I have an appointment on Monday to check fluid levels again and if it’s still low I will suck it up and get induced
I'm so excited I got to see her since I didn't get to see much last time. She was moving around a little bit but she definitely looks like she could be asleep. I'm just so ready to have her in my arms! I'm at my obgyn now so I'm about to find out if I dilated anymore since last week. I'll keep you posted love.🥰

I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid). When diagnosed I was 26wks. Amniotic fluid level was 24 so I had to be scheduled to come back in in 2wks to be monitored. When I returned my levels dropped to 21. Now I'll be 34wks tomorrow and my levels are now 17, still high b/ not as high as before. I have not gained or lost any weight since being diagnosed. With that said, amniotic fluid levels are dropping b/ baby boy is picking up the weight. I am so thankful to God to have made progress for my baby boy because this has me so stressed and worried b/ I place it in His hands and I trust Him! Thank you Lord! #thankful #blessed #polyhydramnios #babyboy
Same happened to me and my son we are now at normal levels 🙏🏾

I forgot to update y’all from yesterday. So I was not leaking amniotic fluid BUT the other concern was last Wednesday my fluid levels were perfect, they were always perfect every sonogram appointment when they would check. Last Wednesday the total fluid was 11 something & yesterday the total fluid was 8.37. Like I drink plenty of water & this is new to me besides with my daughter they induced me at 37 weeks for having low amniotic fluid at my sonogram appointment. If I drink wayyyy to much water I’ll start to feel nauseous but I drink at least 60-80 oz a day 🤦🏽♀️
Yesterday’s ultrasound ❤️ Still a little high on amniotic fluid levels and officially scheduled to be induced next Thursday at 8pm. One more appointment left before we meet our sweet girl - unless these contractions start getting more productive and she comes sooner!
I don’t remember exactly. They said it’s likely due to the gestational diabetes. Last week it had gone down some since I started insulin and they didn’t get to tell me the level yesterday because I was having so many contractions that I got sent to labor and delivery (again.)

My baby girl is getting baby fat 🥰. Growth scan is on Friday, my amniotic fluid levels look alright. I just can’t believe that she looks nothing like me, she’s like 100% her dad’s daughter lol.
Ok Mama's anyone else ever experienced having polyhydrmnios... And need an amniocentesis to drain the extra fluid..? Happened to me today. I'm 35 weeks and have been battling this for a few weeks now. They took an extra 2 liters of amniotic fluid out to get me back to normal levels. Wasn't fun but it had to be done
