Breastfeeding: beware of mastitis

Sore breasts, redness, sensitivity... breastfeeding is not always a smooth ride and you have to be careful about complications.

  • Among the main risks: mastitis.
  • It is the consequence of untreated engorgement.
  • It causes a high fever and must be treated quickly.
  • The best remedy?
  • Breastfeeding as frequently as possible.
  • Don't hesitate to breastfeed your baby as often as possible, even if you have to double or triple the number of daily feedings.
  • The main thing is to drain the breast as much as possible.
  • If after 48 hours you are still not better, your doctor can prescribe a suitable treatment.

Mastitis is worse than the spinal I received for my c-section! I thought the spinal was the worst part since they had issues getting it placed! I feed every 2/3 hours, so I hope whatever is going on doesn’t happen again! Mastitis is awful 😢 going to see a lactation specialist tomorrow in hopes to get more advice. Maybe I am doing something wrong and didn’t know I was!

I was still on my pain pills from my C-section when I started pumping and got mastitis. Hot showers helped a lot with the pain for me and if it still hurts I’d put a frozen food bag on them. Keep pumping on the letdown/ massage mode to help get some of the milk out, I had to dump the milk with my pain pills and mastitis but I wanted to keep my milk supply. I’m still making a lot but not quiet as much as I was, my lactation nurse told me to put a hot wash cloth on and massage before I pump to open all of the milk ducts.

Oh no!! Hope you get some relief soon!! That spinal block sucked for my c section!! They also had a hard time finding the spot. Then after they did and the meds started to work my blood pressure dropped to 70/?. They won’t let me know the second number because as soon as I heard the first number I was about ready to jump off that table (couldn’t for obvious reasons). But I freaked! I honestly thought I was in the process of dying when my Bp dropped so low!! One of the reasons my baby girl is my last!

Warm compression, so like warm wash clothes, or taking a warm shower to get a bit of a let down so you aren’t engorged badly and causing pain in your breasts. It’s what I do for my engorgement. Ibuprofen is good for swelling too if you wanna try pain meds! I hope you feel better I have no clue if this’ll help! Also just keep massaging your breasts and the sore spots and hopefully unclogs❤️

Went to the doctors for not feeling good with not being able to move well and it turns out I am starting to get mastitis. So cabbage leaves and antibiotics will hopefully help.

Be careful with the cabbage leaves they are also known to dry your supply out. I got mastitis when my baby was 2 weeks old I took my Motrin and stayed pumping to relieve as much as possible that along with soaking breast in some super warm salt water after every pump. I know it's super painful but try and hand express your milk a few mins before pumping a long with massaging.

Yeah I think I'll just pump more and take the medicine and try to avoid the cabbage

Any tips for mastitis? I'm not sure if I should use cold or warm compress. Cold will cut back my milk supply but warm might make me produce more when I'm already producing too much. Not sure what the right move is or what to do to help ease the pain

As long as you don’t have a fever you can treat yourself at home. Warm compress and massage breast downward into your breast pump with the excess and freeze it. Take garlic because it has anti microbial properties. Also put cool cabbage leaves on your breasts after. I know it may seem odd but Because of certain plant compounds found in cabbage, the leaves may have an anti-inflammatory effect on breast tissue when applied directly to your skin for only 20 minutes the cabbage leaves absorb some of the fluid from the glands within the breast area, reducing the fullness in the tissue. Hope this helps ♥️

Make a lactation appointment, with my first I went through it 3 times in 1 month and a half because I didn't know anything about breast feeding. This time I learned a lot more, I also followed this mastitis page and blog. Warm cloths over the breasts, cabbage leaves on the breast, making sure to massage the breast and not stress out. Definitely don't keep pumping because your body will produce more more more and the infection isn't gone yet and the clogged ducts are still clogged. I learned that not pumping for the first 2-6 weeks is normal and ok because milk supply doesn't regulate until 4-6 weeks!❤️

MASTITIS SUCKS! I have had it twice now and both times felt like I got hit by a freaking bus. When I take Lecithin regularly it seriously prevents clogs. I got lazy about it and I’ve had 2 clogs and mastitis again since. Never again 😭 I seriously when to bed with 3 covers out of the dryer barely being able to move. My baby daddy put my medicine in my mouth and everything. Woke up sweating bullets. The only thing that has seemed to help work it out is using a vibrator to work it out and the haaka. 10/10 do not recommend
