Managing High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy

Managing High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy
If you're navigating pregnancy with high blood pressure (hypertension), you're not alone. It's all about keeping those numbers in check for your and your baby's health.
Let's dive into how you can manage hypertension during this special time.
  • High blood pressure can be pre-existing or develop during pregnancy (known as gestational hypertension).
  • Proper management is crucial to reduce the risk of preeclampsia, a more serious condition.
  • Regular monitoring with your healthcare provider is key.
Your Diet: A Powerful Ally in Blood Pressure Management
Believe it or not, what you eat plays a huge role in managing blood pressure. Think of your diet as a delightful, yet strategic, toolkit.
  • Embrace foods rich in potassium, like bananas, oranges, and leafy greens.
  • Reduce sodium intake; opt for herbs and spices instead of salt.
  • Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Physical Activity: A Gentle Approach to Well-being
Staying active is beneficial, but when you have high blood pressure, it's all about the right kind and amount. Gentle and regular exercise can help manage your blood pressure and boost your mood. 🧘‍♀️
  • Activities like walking, prenatal yoga, or swimming are excellent.
  • Aim for moderate activity, but always listen to your body and rest when needed.
  • Consult with your healthcare provider about the safest exercise plan for you.
Monitoring and Medication: Keeping a Close Eye
Monitoring your blood pressure is more important than ever now. For some, medication might be necessary to keep those numbers in line.
  • Regularly check your blood pressure at home or with your provider.
  • If you're already on medication for hypertension, your doctor might adjust the dosage.
  • In some cases, new blood pressure medication may be prescribed during pregnancy.
Remember, managing high blood pressure during pregnancy is about taking care of both you and your baby. With mindful eating, appropriate exercise, and regular monitoring, you're setting the stage for a healthier journey.

Have they started you on lebetalol? I have it too but I also have diabetes. Just make sure if you are starting lebetalol buy a blood pressure cuff and keep an eye on it. Last week my dose changed because I was hitting 150/100 when prior to my 3rd trimester my dosage was perfect and it was 116/78 ish. I would get a cuff that has Bluetooth to have your pressure saved on your phone to keep in touch with a case manager for your blood pressure. My doctor has my case manager forward my numbers to her weekly to make changes as needed.

Here at the doctors 1st time back since the miscarriage. Can’t believe my blood pressure is high. When they say pregnancy change your body they ain’t lying. I never had high blood pressure til I got pregnant. Hopefully I can still get pregnant and miscarry again.

High blood pressure could be associated with being anxious about being back at the ob for the first time since a loss. Ik when I went for the first time after my loss which was 2 years later my blood pressure was through the roof...

I was having bp issues in the beginning of my pregnancy. But so far it's been normal at home and at high risk and ob doctor appointments. I'm also taking baby aspirin. The highest mines were was 140/80. Didn't have bp issues in my first pregnancy so this time I'm trying my best not to stress a lot. Which seems to be difficult.

Anyone over 35 and struggle with high blood sugar and blood pressure? Starting my 9 week and this is already classed a high risk pregnancy. Just really worried about trying to do all the best things I can do.

I was definitely put in the high risk zone. I started checking my blood pressure daily at home. I was given a blood pressure cuff for at home use but you can get one on Amazon I have been monitoring my sugar as well after every meal with this product called one drop. Also baby aspirin prevents pre eclampsia. Ask your doctor about it.

Thank you for replying. I'm checking blood sugar 4 daily and blood pressure min. 3 times per week. They began new meds. That seems to be helping for the first time ever since I began a med. Regimen, in dropping my counts. I did read lastnight baby aspirin can help and will ask doc. About starting that too. Thank you again for some pointers.

Question, I have to keep an eye on my blood pressure during this pregnancy. I feel like my heart rate is always high sometimes over 100 even when I'm not doing anything. Sometimes my blood pressure will be normal but my heart rate will be really high. The highest it has ever been is 121. Is that normal or should I be concerned?

i don't think that's normal but i have the same problem. my ob/gyn suggest i see a cardiologist to rule out any symptoms that are not pregnancy related.

Textbook BP is 120/80. As long as you are in somewhere near that range you're probably OK. If it gets drastically higher or lower then see your doctor.

I did. To the point I wish they started me on more than just low dose aspirin. When I went in a month ago, I had a BP of 172/114 and was severely pre-eclampitic. I was asymptomatic all through Pregnancy because I just mellowed it out. Avoided caffeine, didn't do straining work other than my physical therapy. Took walks. And ate less salt. But it only lowered it so much before it spiked again. I would really listen to your doctors. Raise some concerns about the meds. They might know more. I know I was stubborn about not wanting to take the aspirin, but I really should have listened. It turned out fine for me, sure. Isabella came 5 weeks early, but she wasn't ill and only spent about 5 days in the NICU, but I know other babies don't get that lucky. It sucks. I know. I really do. But try to just keep in mind that it will more than likely be temporary.

High blood pressure while pregnant. My high risk doctors don’t seem to concerned about it but before pregnancy in at the beginning of my pregnancy I didn’t have high blood pressure now I do and when I ask them they tell me they don’t know why I’m experiencing high blood pressure I read something about Preeclampsia now I’m really scared 😔
