Fontanel: The Soft Spot on Your Baby's Head

Fontanel: The Soft Spot on Your Baby's Head
Are you curious about that soft spot on your baby's head?
It's called a fontanel, and it's a fascinating and important part of your little one's anatomy.
Let's dive into the world of fontanels and uncover what makes them so special.
What is a Fontanel? 🔍
Fontanels are the spaces between the bones of your baby's skull.
These areas are not fully fused at birth, allowing for flexibility and growth of the skull as your baby develops.
The largest fontanel, known as the anterior fontanel, is located at the top of the head and is diamond-shaped. The smaller posterior fontanel is found at the back of the head.
The Purpose of Fontanels 🌱
Fontanels serve a crucial role during your baby's early development.
They allow the skull to mold and adapt as your little one passes through the birth canal during delivery.
Additionally, fontanels provide space for your baby's brain to grow rapidly in their first year of life.
The flexibility of the fontanels also enables the skull bones to gradually fuse together over time.
Caring for Fontanels
Your baby's fontanels are delicate and require gentle care. Here are a few important tips to keep in mind:
  • Daily Checks: Take a moment to inspect the fontanels regularly. They should feel firm, slightly curved, and not bulge outward or inward. If you notice any unusual changes or concerns, don't hesitate to consult your healthcare provider.
  • Supportive Positions: When handling your baby, make sure to support their head and neck to avoid any excessive pressure on the fontanels. Use both hands to cradle their head, allowing for proper support and comfort.
  • Gentle Touch: While washing your baby's hair or applying gentle pressure during massages, be mindful around the fontanels. Use soft, gentle strokes and avoid pressing directly on the soft spots.
Fontanels and Developmental Milestones 🌟
As your baby grows and develops, the fontanels will gradually close.
By the time your little one reaches 12 to 18 months, the fontanels should be completely fused.
The closure of the fontanels is an important developmental milestone, indicating the growth and maturation of your baby's skull.

37 weeks 3 days. 1cm dilated and cervix almost 100% thin. They can feel my babies head too. Baby is head down since about 23 weeks. Did they do a membrane sweep?

No, definitely not! No need for her to come out at 38 weeks unless she’s ready, I’ve luckily been healthy🙏🏼♥️

It could just be the way the picture was captured. Try not to worry Hun. I've had 4 losses and I get the fear that grips you when you see something out of the ordinary❤️❤️ I'm currently pregnant with #5 so I totally understand.❤️❤️

I’m sorry for ur losses ❤️ me and my tech were both wondering what it was, she thinks it’s an eye socket, I feel like it’s the skull, I just want to be sure it’s not an abnormal

I put this stuff on my baby’s cradle cap and it literally fell off in the bath 🤯 like a bunch of the scales got soft and looked like little white dots stuck in her hair, pics of her head in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

I can feel where my baby is for the first time....I think. One side has firmness where all around it and on the other side it's soft. Makes sense that the firmness is his head right?
