First Prenatal Visit 101

First Prenatal Visit 101
Your first prenatal visit is an essential step in ensuring a healthy and peaceful pregnancy journey.
This initial appointment will provide you with valuable information, support, and the opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have.
Here's a guide to help you navigate your first prenatal visit.
Scheduling the Appointment
Timing: It's generally recommended to schedule your first prenatal visit as soon as you confirm your pregnancy. Most healthcare providers suggest making an appointment between 6 and 10 weeks of gestation.
Choosing a Provider: If you haven't already chosen a healthcare provider for your pregnancy, this is the time to do so. You can opt for an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN), a midwife, or a family physician with prenatal care expertise.
Medical History: When scheduling your appointment, be prepared to provide information about your medical history, including any pre-existing conditions, previous pregnancies, surgeries, or medications you are currently taking.
What to Bring
Identification and Insurance: Remember to bring your identification, insurance card, and any necessary paperwork or forms required by your healthcare provider.
Medical Records: If you have any medical records related to your previous pregnancies or pre-existing conditions, it's helpful to bring them to your appointment. This will provide your healthcare provider with a comprehensive overview of your medical history.
List of Questions: Prepare a list of questions or concerns you would like to discuss during the appointment, like:
"What dietary changes should I consider during pregnancy?"
"What prenatal vitamins are best for me?"
"How much physical activity is safe?"
What to Expect
Health Assessment: Your healthcare provider will conduct a comprehensive health assessment, including a physical examination, blood pressure measurement, and weight assessment. They may also ask about your medical history and any current symptoms you are experiencing.
Prenatal Tests: Depending on your individual circumstances, your healthcare provider may order various prenatal tests, such as blood tests, urine analysis, and an ultrasound. These tests help assess your overall health, identify any potential risks, and estimate your due date.
Discussion of Medical History: Your healthcare provider will likely inquire about your medical history, including previous pregnancies, surgeries, chronic conditions, and medications. This information is vital for providing appropriate care and identifying any potential complications or risks.
Building a Relationship
Establishing Trust: The first prenatal visit is a chance to build a strong relationship with your healthcare provider. Take this opportunity to share your expectations, values, and preferences regarding your pregnancy and birth plan.
Ongoing Care: Your first prenatal visit marks the beginning of a series of regular appointments throughout your pregnancy. Establishing a positive and trusting relationship with your healthcare provider will ensure comprehensive care and support throughout this journey.

Today is my first prenatal visit. My daughter is almost 4 so I forget what it’s like. We’ve had 3 miscarriages since this “successful” pregnancy that started at the fertility clinic. I’m so anxious! Someone remind me what happens please. #10weeks

Hello I have 2 kids and had 2 previous miscarriages so you are not alone ❤️ When I went they had me pee in a cup and gave me a pregnancy test to confirm, they also drew blood to check my hcg levels, my doctor gave me a Pap smear and checked my breast’s as well

My first prenatal visit was Monday, my due date is 10/26 for now but I was told I’m measuring a week behind my due date. I was 7w1d , doctor said this is normal and just to repeat the ultrasound. Is it wrong to still be worried/ nervous? #firstpregnancy

I wouldn’t worry I always measure “big” baby pops out small and is considered underweight now 🫣 If there is a heartbeat and everything else checks out don’t worry!

I had my first official prenatal visit today. She said it was hard to catch a heartbeat because the baby was doing a lot of kicking and moving around 😭I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing
