Breastfeeding introduction: when to do it?

After the miracle of birth, it's time to get to know each other better, possibly through the first breastfeeding.

  • When your baby comes out of your belly, he or she doesn't usually need to be fed immediately.
  • About one to two hours after the birth, the latching and sucking reflex will start to develop, and this is when the first breastfeeding can take place.
  • Breastfeeding has many benefits for your newborn. In addition to direct contact that reassures your child and establishes a connection, the first milk (also called the colostrum), is a very concentrated food that strengthens natural defenses.

Honestly when I get overwhelmed I just remind myself this isn’t forever and it’s the best for my sweet boy. This is my third breastfed child but I’ve had a 12 year gap so it feels like starting all over. It can definitely feel draining and overwhelming at times. Just take deep breaths and don’t give up you got this mama 🫶🏼

First time mom here. I'm breastfeeding and pumping for my baby. I have bad pain when she first starts to suck or when I first start to pump. I do wear a nipple shield. When does this get better? #firsttimemom #breastfeeding #pumping #pain

I haven’t started yet but I’ve heard that the first 6 weeks are the worst and after that it does get better. Just stick with it. You got this!

Took us a couple weeks to establish a good latch so don’t get discouraged. A shield can be a great way to help protect until you get it all settled. See if you can find a lactation consultant too to try all different kinds of positions. You might find some work better than others for you and baby!

Has anyone ever experienced not being able to produce enough milk when breastfeeding. This is my 3 rd pregnancy but my first time breastfeeding. I’m hearing some women to not being able to supply enough milk..

I noticed that when I was pumping every 3 hrs, I produced ALOT of milk but exclusively breastfeeding, my supply went down ALOT. So I recommend pumping after each feed to keep the supply abundant. Your body creates what’s needed so if your breast are constantly stimulated, the milk supply will fill to what’s being demanded.

Ya I didn't have much either so we had to supplement. But we didn't care just as long as she was fed. I was able to go 10 months with my daughter. She had a full mouthful of teeth by the time she was a year old so....I was so glad she stopped haha😊

It is painful at first it always take time for my nipple to toughen up the dry out if I don't use nipple cream and Crack. But overall it gets better and gets to a point where they don't hurt at all. It just takes time
